Detroit Lions jersey history album

1969/72 Adrian Young

This Sand-Knit durene jersey dates prior to 1970.  NFL teams added player names to the jerseys in 1970, a rule change resulting from the merger with the AFL.  On some jerseys, as with this one, the back numbers were removed and resewn lower down to accommodate the player name.  The local supplier's tag, from Griswold Sporting Goods, also dates from the late 1960s.

The original long sleeves were shortened by the team.  Evidence of the upper portions of the reinforced elbows remains.  Heavy game wear suggests it was reused until finally issued to Adrian Young in 1972.

The 1969 Lions home and away uniform graphic, below, was created by George Ashburn.
